Global Health Initiative: How PEPFAR Fits In

Earlier this month, the Obama Administration revealed an important new piece of its foreign policy agenda: a consultation document on the strategy for the Global Health Initiative (GHI). This document outlines the U.S. Government’s operation plan for the GHI, emphasizing integration of programming, implementation of sustainable efforts, efficient approaches with positive results and collaboration among partners.

PEPFAR is the cornerstone of the President's Global Health Initiative, which commits $63 billon dollars over six years to support partner countries in improving and expanding access to health services — a stunning level of investment that would have been unimaginable even 10 years ago. The Global Health Initiative will increase funding both for HIV/AIDS and for other important activities such as maternal and child health, family planning, malaria, neglected tropical diseases, and strengthening health systems, in recognition of the fact that developing nations face a range of interrelated health challenges.
